Disclosure: we build Lemma Analysis, a research tool for US stocks, so we are not a neutral party here. Every other tool’s price was read from its own pricing page on the date shown beside it, each tool gets its limitations as well as its strengths, ours included, and the method is set out under “How we tested”.
The short answer: for a free and familiar tracker, Yahoo Finance; to host your own, Ghostfolio; for performance and tax reporting across markets, Sharesight; for dividend income, Snowball Analytics; for stocks and crypto together, Delta; for analytics and research on US and Canadian stocks, Stock Rover. Lemma Analysis, which we build, is the one that pairs the tracker with a valuation of each holding and a written thesis, on US-listed stocks. Most trackers report what happened; this list also asks which help you decide what to do next.
The order is not a ranking: free tools come first, then paid ones roughly by what they add. Each row ends on who the tracker is genuinely the right choice for.

A tracker made the list if it met all three of these:
We then asked of each what a long-term investor needs from one: how trades get in, how honestly returns are measured, and whether it helps with the decision about each holding.
Every tracker answers what you own and how it has done. The good ones measure that properly — a return that separates your skill from the timing of your deposits, which our piece on time-weighted and money-weighted return works through with numbers — and add risk: drawdowns, volatility, correlation between holdings.
Fewer answer the question you face on the day a holding falls 20%: is it now cheaper than it is worth, or has the reason you bought it gone? That takes two things a reporting tool does not hold — a valuation of the company, and the reason you bought it, written down before the price moved. An investment thesis with a review date is the second; a DCF or a set of multiples is the first.
Neither is needed to track a portfolio, and if all you want is accurate returns and tax reports, a reporting tool is the better buy. If you want the tracker to be where you decide what to do, the Valuation & thesis column of the table is the one to read.

On the check date at the top of the page we read each tracker’s pricing page, plan comparison and help documentation, and wrote down what the free plan allows, how transactions get in, how performance is measured and whether any valuation or note-taking exists. Prices are the cheapest paid plan at list price in US dollars, before tax and promotions; a plan sold only yearly shows only the yearly figure, and a monthly price quoted for yearly billing is not turned into a total.
We did not connect our own brokerage accounts to the competitors or buy their paid plans, so nothing here describes how reliable a sync is after a year of use. Where a vendor’s pages did not say — which US brokers Delta connects, which markets Ghostfolio covers — the entry says that rather than guessing. Our own entry was written from the product, with its limits stated the same way. The page is re-checked every quarter.
It depends on what you want from it. For accurate returns and tax reports, Sharesight; for dividend income, Snowball Analytics; for a free and familiar tracker, Yahoo Finance; to host it yourself, Ghostfolio; for stocks and crypto together, Delta; for analytics and research on US and Canadian stocks, Stock Rover. If you want each holding valued and a written thesis beside it, that is what Lemma Analysis is built for, on US-listed stocks only.
Few trackers value the companies you hold. Stock Rover shows a computed fair value on a limited number of tickers a month, and Yahoo Finance offers fair value analysis from its Silver plan. Lemma Analysis links every holding to four valuation models you can edit, including two DCFs, as part of Ultimate.
For unlimited holdings at no cost, Ghostfolio if you host it yourself, or Yahoo Finance. Sharesight, Snowball Analytics and Delta each allow ten holdings free. Lemma Analysis allows 1 portfolio of 10 positions typed in by hand, with the Quality Score on every holding and 5 journal entries.
Sharesight, Snowball Analytics (paid plans), Delta and Stock Rover (from Premium) connect to brokers, Sharesight and Snowball to a very wide range of them. Ghostfolio imports files only. Lemma Analysis connects Trading 212 and Interactive Brokers directly and imports other brokers’ CSV exports, on Ultimate.
With a method that accounts for when money went in and out. A simple gain divided by cost overstates or understates a year with deposits; a money-weighted return (XIRR, or Modified Dietz as Sharesight uses) measures your own result, and a time-weighted return measures the strategy without the timing of deposits. Comparing either with an index such as the S&P 500 tells you whether the effort paid.
Lemma Analysis gives independent investors both lenses in one terminal — a stock screener and an intrinsic value tool for the fundamentals, alongside price history and charts for timing.
