Disclosure: we build Lemma Analysis, a research tool for US stocks, so we are not a neutral party here. Every other tool’s price was read from its own pricing page on the date shown beside it, each tool gets its limitations as well as its strengths, ours included, and the method is set out under “How we tested”.
The short answer: for a free pass over the US market on value ratios, Finviz; for scores and a DCF worldwide at a low price, Stock Unlock; for the deepest fundamental screening and ready-made value screens, Stock Rover; to backtest a screen on point-in-time data, Portfolio123; for guru portfolios and global history, GuruFocus. Lemma Analysis, which we build, is the US-only option where each result opens on four valuation models and a Quality Score. A value screen is only half the job, so the table also says what each tool does with a result.
The order is not a ranking: free tools come first, then paid ones. Each row ends on who the tool is genuinely the right choice for.

A screener made the list if it met all three of these:
These are the screeners that come up most often when value investors ask which tool to use, and each answers the next step differently.
A screen for value investing asks two questions at once: is the price low relative to what the company earns, and is the company worth owning at all? Ratios answer the first; the second takes measures of the business itself.
Our guide to using a stock screener walks through building a screen like this, filter by filter.

On the check date at the top of the page we read each tool’s pricing and plan pages, its screener and its help documentation, and wrote down which value and quality filters it offers on which plan and what it does with a result. Prices are the cheapest paid plan at list price in US dollars, before tax and promotions; a plan sold only yearly shows only the yearly figure.
We did not buy the competitors’ paid plans, and we did not run the same screen through all six to compare results: their universes, data vendors and update times differ too much for one list of tickers to say which is right. GuruFocus’s screener pages could not be loaded on the check date, so its entry relies on its pricing page. Our own entry was written from the product, with its limits stated the same way. The page is re-checked every quarter.
It depends on what you do after the screen. To scan cheaply for ratios, Finviz; to screen on scores and value one company with a DCF worldwide, Stock Unlock; for the deepest metric library and ready-made value screens, Stock Rover; to backtest a strategy, Portfolio123; to follow guru portfolios, GuruFocus. If you want each result to open on several valuation models and a quality grade, on US-listed companies, that is what Lemma Analysis is built for.
A reasonable start is a valuation filter on cash flow (price to free cash flow or FCF yield, or EV/EBITDA), a quality filter on returns (ROIC or ROE over several years), and a solvency filter (net debt to EBITDA or debt to equity). Add a market-cap floor if you want liquid companies. Then value what remains — the screen only tells you where to look.
Finviz is the most complete free one for US stocks, and Stock Analysis gives a large free filter set including the Piotroski F-Score. Our article on the best free stock screeners compares six of them.
Portfolio123 is built for it, on point-in-time data, and GuruFocus backtests screens on its Premium plans. Stock Rover says it has no dedicated backtesting, and Lemma Analysis has none.
No. The screener is part of Ultimate, and every new account gets seven days of it without a card. It covers about three thousand US-listed companies and ADRs; what stays free after the trial includes the Quality Score on every company.
Lemma Analysis gives independent investors both lenses in one terminal — a stock screener and an intrinsic value tool for the fundamentals, alongside price history and charts for timing.
